Education

To meet the projected labor demand in Matagorda County, we partnered with Wharton County Junior College and Texas A&M University to provide hands-on technical and academic resources to our community.

There are also 20 higher education institutions within 100 miles of the county, which offer access to hundreds of degrees and certification plans.

In addition to higher education and certification programs, there are five independent school districts in Matagorda County, as well as a private school, a solid homeschooling network, and several pre-school options.

Bay City Independent School District

Bay City Independent School District (BCISD) consists of a high school, a junior high school, and three elementary schools. BCISD is a 4A University Interscholastic League (UIL) district with an average enrollment of 4,000 students. BCISD can offer your children a first-class education with highly qualified, caring staff members and a hometown school district with big-city opportunities.

Small town schools have a higher teacher to student ratio and allow students to have unique experiences and opportunities. At Bay City High School, students can take Advanced Placement or Dual Credit courses. An articulation agreement with Wharton Junior College allows our students to earn as many as 60 college credits before they even graduate from high school. Students can choose from 50 Career and Technology Education (CTE) courses in ten different Career Pathways.

Wharton County Junior College

In 2008, a monumental partnership with Bay City Community Development Corporation led to the creation of Wharton County Junior College’s (WCJC) Bay City Campus housed in the Center for Energy Development. The Bay City Campus is a state-of-the-art facility that features two industrial labs specifically designed for the Process Technology and Power Technology programs and three industrial labs serving the Manufacturing Technology program. There are interactive television classrooms that link students to other WCJC campuses and instructors, as well as a computer lab that serves all students in all programs.

WCJC provides educational degrees in several program areas and has a local satellite campus that offers associate degrees in Process Technology, Nuclear Power Technology and Manufacturing Technology. Other program options are available at the central campus in Wharton, just 25 miles from Bay City. WCJC also offers classes at extension centers in nearby El Campo and Palacios, Texas.
